"Small Seeds"
I have always marvelled at the incredible power of seeds. As in, literal, actual seeds, not the metaphorical concept of seeds. (we'll get to that shortly)
I'm constantly amazed how these tiny little pouches of genetic dynamite are able to produce the most magnificent trees, fruits, colours etc . . . as long as you provide the ideal environment for their potential to be unlocked.
Isn't it stunning how everything we observe in this life that is vital and alive, actually began as a tiny seed; A tree, a business, a song, a painting, even a human life!
It's helpful to be reminded of the perpetual presence of this process, so that we don't grow into the habit of despising small beginnings.
Everybody dreams of tremendous outcomes, and there is very little wrong with that. However, sometimes we become so obsessed with the outcome, that we forget the super importance of the seed that starts it all.
There is a simple Scripture verse that stayed in my memory from my childhood. It reads like this "Do not despise the day of small beginnings"
It's a strong reminder to not fall into the trap of only loving outcomes.
We live in a world that has learned to despise process, in favour of short cuts, hacks and cheat codes.
However, hastily speeding up the process, often endangers the seed, and aborts the whole process, guaranteeing you will have to start all over again.
Last week, I experienced a powerful and heart-warming reminder of this principle in action.
I was in attendance at a thank you dinner for a prominent charity in Sydney. Upon arrival I was greeted by the host, who was also the CEO of the charity, a friend of mine, and whom I also thought would be the only person I would know at the event.
Shortly after arrival, he introduced me to another guest by the name of Matt. We shook hands and greeted each other politely.
Immediately after hearing my first name, he paused for a few seconds, stared intently at me, and enquired if my last name was Gray (which it is) (I had only offered my first name as I met him).
So, when he asked me of my surname, I replied and said "Yes, how did you know?" (genuinely curious to learn of how he knew me, when I didn't have the first clue who he was).
He proceeded to say to me "You won't know who I am, and nor should you, but . . . when I was about 14 years old, I started attending the youth conferences you used to host annually for youth groups across Australia over 25 years ago. I attended those conferences for 4-5 years, and to this day (he is now in his early 40's), they are probably the most important identity-forming experiences of my entire life!"
WOW!
I was so surprised, so encouraged, so amazed at this small seed of a story coming full circle to tell me of the fruit that had grown more than a quarter of a century later. It was just tremendous!!
I sat down at my assigned seat at the long table and said to myself with a smile "there ya go hey. do not despise small beginnings"
So . . . . what can you do with all of this?
- Be encouraged - Everything in your life worth pursuing, starts small
- Sow seeds continually - You never know what might grow over time
- Nurture the environment of seeds sown - The seed knows what to do
